Highly recommend. I have really enjoyed this book, and it has helped me learned a lot. Verying interesting which helps you learn and has a lot of useful information.
I used all of the practice quizzes to make sure I had a solid understanding of the material. It includes a section on the "Top 200" drugs, and this is the hardest section because it is almost 100% memorization, unless you work in a pharmacy. The book is logically layed out, making it easy to build upon the knowledge aquired in previous chapters.
Part of the plan was to get a part-time job in a pharmacy, while I complete my pre-requisites. I got an 840 out of 900, and the only weakness that I had was with some of the drugs. The time had come for a mid-life career change, and I have settled upon pursuing a PharmD from scratch.
There were four questions I had to absolutely guess on. The workbook (sold separately) was invaluable by adding more quizzes and a couple of practice exams.I would highly recommend both books. Passing the PTCB's certification exam made perfect sense.Since I have never worked in a pharmacy, I chose "The Pharmact Technician" and its workbook (sold separately)as my basis for study.
After a solid two weeks of studying three or four hours a day, I took the exam and passed on the first try.
If you're going to buy it make sure you know generic substitutes for brand name drugs and be aware of the possible interactions each could have with food. I read this book only and passed the test.BUT, be warned there are quite a few things on the test that are not included in this book, and some of the stuff in this book is not covered on the test. (ie no dairy with doxycycline)As far as the calculations and conversions go, this book is good. The content explored in this book is great. It thoroughly covers reading sigs, latin/greek prefixes and suffixes, Routes of administration and some good surface level basics on physiology.
Well written, comprehensive, and easy to understand. I've seen other prep and review books for technicians but this one is definitely one of the best.
Overall, a great buy for preparing for the exam. I was fortunate to have also received a companion workbook at no charge with this purchase that is very useful after completing the study guide (it usually sells separately for $30).
I researched various study guides for a friend who was interested in preparing for the PTCB exam and this one looked like a winner. It covers everything that a tech needs to know before sitting for an exam.
Highly recommend. After receiving it, I went through it to review and I liked it a lot.
It has review summaries at the end of each chapter plus a short quiz.
It is a great all-inclusive resource to have in the pharmacy. This book is very easy to use and navigate through, and seems to be an excellent resource for pharmacy technicians. It is lengthy and covers all types of practice settings.
